I was editing the July issue's Buyer's Guide on event-log managers and found some free administrator tools you might want to check out.
ManageEngine offers a suite of free Windows' tools at manageengine.adventnet.com/products/free-windows-tools/free-windows-tools.html. The suite is named Free Windows Tools 1.3 and the download is approximately 2.48MB. Interestingly, free email technical support and online documentation is offered for free if you register before downloading the file. The only required registration information is your email address.
The suite includes the following free products:
- Wake on LAN Tool—lets you boot remote computers
- GPO Update Tool—lets you perform Group Policy Object (GPO) updates
- Shutdown/Restart Tool—lets you shutdown or restart remote computers
- Software Inventory Tool—lets you retrieve a computer applications' software name, version, and manufacturer, and usage statistics of programs
- Join/Unjoin Computer Tool—lets you move a computer from a domain to another, from a domain to a workgroup, or from a workgroup to a domain
- Remote task Manager Tool—lets you view the processes running on a remote computer
ManageEngine also offers free versions of some of its other software products at manageengine.adventnet.com/free-softwares-download.html. These are not free trials, and the free licenses do not expire. The company says there are user and device limitations. The company does not offer formal support for these free products, but you can post messages in the company's forums at forums.advent.com.
