Personal folder files (PSTs—files with the .pst extension) provide a means of storing data such as mail messages and calendar events in a way that makes the data accessible through Microsoft Office Outlook. Users typically use PSTs to compensate for storage quotas on an Exchange server. Because users can’t store all their messages on an Exchange server indefinitely, they'll often move most of their messages to PSTs that are stored locally instead. Although PSTs are convenient, they also have drawbacks that might cause you to consider gradually eliminating them from your Exchange organization. . . .

Reader Comments
Although the article states the DisablePST value only works with Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, I deployed this option with Office 2003 & SP1 when it was first released.

Hi Gerard,
Thanks for your comments. Here's Brien's response:

It is entirely possible that the process might work with Office 2003 SP1. The information that I found while researching the article indicated that it would only work with SP2, and I had no way of testing the technique with a previous service pack. Service Pack 2 was the only version for which I was able to validate that the technique worked. -- Brien Posey
