A. If you want to remotely manage BackOffice Server (BOS) programs in a large or midsize enterprise, you can install the full version of each program on one computer that you can use as an administration server. You can then manage the other servers in the enterprise from one location, using each program's management tools. However, this solution might not always be practical because of BOS 4.5's hardware requirements.

When the computer you want to use as the local administration server doesn't have enough resources for a full BOS installation, you can install each program's management tools using an "administration server scenario" to allow full management of the location's servers on underpowered computers. The following list details the minimum components required to build an administration server for your BOS 4.5 network (note that the total disk space required for installation is 200MB to 250MB):

  • Windows NT Server 4.0--install as a member server in the master domain
  • NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) or later
  • Internet Explorer (IE) 5.0
  • Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 1.1
  • NT 4.0 Option Pack--install Internet Server Manager, Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), the common files, and Transaction Server
  • Exchange Server 5.5--install the Exchange Administrator program
  • SQL Server 7.0--install the management tools and client connectivity components
  • BackOffice Server--install the administration tools, Web Administration, and the Help files
